Why we built ComplyLandlord
Staying compliant as a landlord should not mean wading through legislation or guessing whether the plumber down the road is actually registered. We built the tool we wished existed: quick, honest, and free.
The problem we kept running into
Gas safety rules are not complicated once you know them — but finding a clear answer is. Official guidance is thorough and a little dense, letting-agent advice varies, and the date your certificate is actually due is surprisingly easy to lose track of. Meanwhile the penalty for getting it wrong is steep: an unlimited fine, and in England a blocked Section 21 if the paperwork slipped.
So we made two things, and gave them away.
1. A free checker, no account needed
Four quick questions tell you whether you are compliant and when your next renewal falls due. You do not create an account, and the checker itself asks for none of your contact details — it just gives you an answer. You are only ever contacted by an engineer if you choose to ask for a quote. If you would like a nudge before your certificate expires, you can leave an email for a one-off reminder, and unsubscribe in a single click.
2. A directory of genuinely verified engineers
Anyone can list a phone number online. We do something simpler and more useful: every engineer in our directory has been checked against the official Gas Safe Register before we list them. We currently cover Greater Manchester — Manchester, Salford, Stockport, Bolton, Oldham, Bury, Trafford and the towns around them — with more areas to follow.
We would rather show you a short list of engineers we have actually verified than a long list we have not. If we cannot confirm someone is registered, they do not appear.
How we keep the lights on
The checker and the guides are free to you and always will be. When you ask to be connected with an engineer, that introduction is how the service sustains itself. We are upfront about it because trust is the entire point — there is no hidden cost to you, and you are never passed details you did not ask us to share. Exactly what we collect and who sees it is set out in our Privacy Policy.
What we are not
We are an informational tool, not a compliance-record service and not a substitute for professional advice. We will help you understand your obligations and find a registered engineer — but the certificate itself, and the final word on your property, always comes from a Gas Safe registered professional.
